1.
The Great Gatsby
Release Date- May 10th
Starring- Leonardo Dicaprio, Tobey Maguire,
Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher
Why I Think It Will Bomb- From the little
I’ve seen about this, The Great Gatsby looks to be an instant contender for
Best Production Design Oscar, but sadly I saw little else to be excited
about. Nothing about this feels genuine
and reminds me of recent Tim Burton movies: it looks nice but everything else
feels completely phoned in. I also think
sandwiching their release right in between Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into
Darkness will work against them.
2. Epic
Release Date- May 24th
Starring-Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson,
Colin Farrell, Beyoncé Knowles, Christoph Waltz
Why I Think It Will Bomb- I had already
found it hard enough for me to see this becoming a hit after seeing the trailer
and assuming it was some kind FernGully remake and the generic title didn’t
help either. To make matters worse, 20th
Century Fox decided to release it on the same weekend as Hangover Part III and Fast
and Furious 6. Somehow, I don’t
think there will enough room for Epic.
3.
After Earth
Release Date- May 31st
Starring-
Will Smith, Jaden Smith
Why
I Think It Will Bomb- Three words: M Night Shayamalan. I would say his movies can't possibly get any worse but he always seems to find a way to outdo himself.
4. World War Z
Release Date- June 21st
Starring- Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos,
James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox, Bryan Cranston
Why I
Think It Will Bomb- The production troubles over World War Z have been well publicized and with the amount of money spent on several weeks
of reshoots and “totally necessary” 3D conversion
this will probably need to make around $300 million just to break even. Somehow, I don’t
really see that happening with a zombie movie.
5. Lone Ranger
Release Date- July 3rd
Starring- Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer,
William Fitchner, Tom Wilkinson, Barry Pepper
Why I Think It Will Bomb- This movie had pretty
much spent the better part of a decade in and out of development hell but was
able to stay alive thanks mostly to Johnny Depp. If he hadn’t stayed attached to it all these
years no studio would’ve touched this with a ten foot pole (and I wouldn’t have
blamed them). When Cowboys and Aliens came out a couple of years ago it showed that
audiences may not be interested in big-budget westerns and that production
budget was a bargain compared to the “official” $250 million price tag attached
to The Lone Ranger and also last year’s
Dark Shadows proved that Depp’s box
office appeal is far from bullet proof.
