1.
Iron Man 3
Release Date- May 3rd
Starring- Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth
Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce
What It’s About- Following the events of The Avengers, Tony Stark must face his
most powerful enemy yet,
the Mandarin. Along the way he finds out the answer to the
question "Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
Why I Want To See It- I’ve always enjoyed
the Iron Man series even if Iron Man 2 wasn't
exactly a masterpiece. Now that Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is directing though, my excitement for the franchise has come back with a vengeance.
2.
Star Trek Into Darkness
Release
Date- May 17th
Starring-
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban
What It’s About-
Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the USS Enterprise crew return to lead the
manhunt of a mysterious new villain that has attacked Starfleet and left Earth
on the brink of destruction
Why
I Want To See It- While I admit I’ve never been crazy about the Star Trek series, I loved watching the
last movie. One of the weak points of
it, however, was the villain. I thought
Eric Bana was over the top (and not in the good way) and his role as Nero to be
weakest written character. This time
though, J.J. Abrams seems to have learned his lesson by not only making the
villain much darker, but also by casting Benedict Cumberbatch
3.
Before Midnight
Release
Date-May 24th
Starring-
Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy
What
It’s About- Nine years of after the end of Before
Sunset, lovebirds Jesse and Celine are married and living in Paris with
twin girls. There’s trouble in paradise
however, as Jesse struggles to maintain a relationship with his son Hank who
now lives with his ex-wife and Celine contemplates taking a government job.
Why
I Want To See It- This is the third and (presumably) final chapter in Richard Linklater’s
brilliant Before Sunrise series and
after seeing (and loving) the first two movies, I’m excited to see how it ends.
4.
Man of Steel
Release
Date- June 14th
Starring-
Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane
What
It’s About- You’ve probably heard the origin story a million times before, so
you don’t really need me to tell it you again.
This time around, Superman must save Earth from the threat of the very
powerful and megalomaniacal Kryptonian General Zod.
Why
I Want To See It- It’s been seven years since Superman has been in a movie and
about thirty years since he’s been in a good one. Now
that Christopher Nolan is overseeing production of this latest interpretation
of Superman, I’m hopeful that he can do for him what he’s done for Batman:
restore his cinematic credibility.
5.
Pacific Rim
Release
Date- July 12th
Starring-
Charlie Hunnum, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day
What
It’s About- In the near future, humans are in a losing war with giant monsters
known as Kaiju. The human’s only defense
against this new threat are gigantic robots known as Jaegers, but eventually
even they prove to be little match for the enemy. Together a former pilot and untested rookie
control an old and out-of-date Jaeger to lead in the human race’s last stand
against an impending apocalypse.
Why
I Want To See It- From what I have seen of Pacific Rim so far, it seems to be
some kind of crazy offspring to Godzilla,
Transformers, and Halo.
All those elements put together will likely make something unbelievably
stupid or completely awesome. For the
time being, I choose to believe the latter.
